License Plate
Dear Scouting member:
As you may be aware, the State of Indiana offers organizations the opportunity for specialty license plates such as one for Boy Scouting. Complete details are on the BMV website or at a local licensing branch but in brief, for a $40 fee an individual can get a specialty plate with $25 of the $40 going back to the local council and $15 going to Bureau of Motor Vehicles – Indiana. The specialty plate is a way to show pride in your affiliation with Scouting plus provide needed revenue.
As an update, in 2011, a new BSA plate is coming out, see picture below
In additional to the specialty plate, for an additional $30, a individual can get a “low digit” plate. The $30 fee is good for 5 years (2011 through 2015); in other words it only needs to be paid in 2011. Low digit is considered 1 through 100. The low digit option has been in place for several years but all organizations have been asked to promote and update records.
What can you do?
1.If you would like to get a Boy Scout license plate with a number above 100, all you have to do is ask for the Boy Scout Plate when you normally renew your plate registration. Some license branches carry the plates in stock while other branches will have to order them.
2.If you are interested in getting a low digit Boy Scout license plate (numbers 1 through 100) give me a call by October 1, 2010 and I will reserve a low digit plate for you. You may call me to see if a particular low digit plate number is available. Low digit numbers will be issued on a first come first serve basis. I cannot guarantee the number but undoubtedly we can provide a low digit plate (under number 100).
Thank you for your interest and support of Scouting in Indiana!

Anyone can purchase a Boy Scout license plate for their vehicle. Your contribution will also continue to help make Scouting available to all of these programs:
- Cub Scouting:
Tiger Cub Scouting - 1st Grade
Cub Scouting - grades 2-3
- Webelos Scouting - grades 4-5
- Boy Scouting - ages 11-17 years
- Varsity Scouting - ages 14-17 years
- Venture Scouting - coed ages 14-20 years
How can you participate?
When you renew, simply add $40 to your payment: $25 goes back to your local Boy Scout Council and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles retains $15 for administrative fees. These plates can be used as the standard vehicle registration plates for passenger cars, recreational vehicles, and trucks weighing less than 11,000 pounds. This is not a vanity plate, so special numbers or messages cannot be accommodated. Your plate selection is good until your next registration renewal.
