Lilly Day Of Service
Children at eight schools in Marion County now have new places to play or explore thanks to eight central Indiana Life Scouts. The Scouts all but completed their Eagle Projects with one major work day on May 15 as part of the Lilly Global Day of Service. The one-day volunteer event united Eli Lilly and Company employees all over the world to make a collective impact on the communities where they live and work.
The Eagle Scout candidates led individual projects at private, public and charter schools in Marion County.
They worked with school administrators, teachers, Lilly volunteers and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful staff to develop and organize the projects. Their volunteer labor force consisted of Lilly employees, school staff, students and Scouting peers.
“This was community service on a scale I have never seen,” said Brent Heslop. He is both an Eagle Scout and a Lilly employee who led the Scouting-related efforts. “Through these projects alone, there were 4,000-5,000 hours of community service delivered all in one day. ”

The Cookout on the Circle helps send over 700 Scouts to Crossroads of America summer camps each and every summer. Unit Program Planning Made Easy
Having a great Scouting year is easier than you think!
We hope the unit program planning materials can ultimately help you prepare for an exciting yaer that gives your Scouts the best experience Scouting can offer. This process has been successful with others in our council and around the country and now we want to share the process with you.
The Unit Program Planning process was developed to help a individual units easily plan for the upcoming year so everyone can spend more time having fun in the Scouting program. One focus is to do just one fundraiser each year to meet all of the units needs.
In 90 minutes, you can have a calendar full of great activities, a budget that is easy to put together. It also provides a sales goal that is easy for your kids to understand and allows them to be actively involved in raising funds.
For more information, go to www.crossroadsbsa.org , click on your program area (Cub Scouts, Boy Scout or Venturing) and then click on the program planning tab on the left side of the page.
Webelos to Scout Transition
Webelos to Scout transition is a year-round process. The summer months are a great time for getting to know the second year Webelos, their parents and den leaders.
Invite Webelos to Boy Scout summer camp family night or visit them at Webelos Adventure Camp. Spend some time to introduce the Boy Scout program to Webelos leaders, parents and the pack’s leadership and offer to help with the pack’s “Back to School Night” in August/September.
Another important step is to share the troop calendar with the Webelos, invite them to a summer activity or service project, especially if you cannot arrange a visit at summer camp. Finally, identify which Boy Scouts may be interested in serving as Webelos den chiefs in the fall. The following steps will help you stay on track with Webelos to Scout transition:
• Boy Scout troops should invite first year Webelos den(s) to visit the troop at Boy Scout summer camp
• Webelos den leaders should invite a Boy Scout troop leader and Senior Patrol Leader to visit their den at Webelos Adventure Camp
• Begin to collect contact information on new second year Webelos (June 1 all Cub Scout dens advance officially, so first year Webelos advance to second year Webelos, Bears advance to first year Webelos, etc.)
• After consulting with pack leaders, appoint den chiefs
2010 National Jamboree
Located in the rolling hills of Caroline County Virginia, Fort A. P. Hill will host the 2010 National Scout Jamboree, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Scouting in America. Located near Fredericksburg and Bowling Green, Fort A. P. Hill will become the fastest growing city in Virginia as thousands of Scouts and leaders arrive at the Jamboree. It will be amazing to watch 17,000 tents and 3,500 patrol kitchens pop up in a matter of hours!
Program features reflect the skills of Scouting, our national heritage, physical fitness, environmental conservation, and the true spirit of Scouting.
For more information on signing up for this once in a lifetime celebration, contact Warren Carson at (317) 925-1900 ext. 206

Summertime Pack Award
Summertime is a great time to enjoy Scouting. There are plenty of great opportunities to get outside and do things that you can’t do during the school year. You can also earn the Summertime Pack Award just by having a great time with your kids. All your pack has to do to earn this colorful certificate and streamer is have three Scouting events during the summer, fill out the form and you have the award. You can do any number of fun and exciting things to earn this award. There are plenty of parks, museums and special summer programs that your pack or den could do to enjoy Scouting all year long and keep the boys coming back for more. Have a great summer!

Fall School Nights
Has your pack, troop, team, crew or post scheduled their Fall School Night or Open House? August and September are right around the corner! Please set a date for your Fall School Night/ Open House now and get it on our calendar and the school calendars now. If you have questions about setting a date or have already set one please contact Kathy Morrison at (765) 286-2094 or Leslie Anderson or Megan Luecke at the Scout office at 765-288-0223.
Webelos Transition
Cub Scout packs should be crossing over their second year Webelos into Boy Scout Troops. There are far too many Cub Scouts lost in this transition. Scoutmasters, make it a goal to talk personally to every Webelo and their parents to see just what their intentions are after Cub Scouting, and invite them to join your troop! Now is the time for Scoutmasters to be communicating with Cub Packs about crossover! Cub leaders can also play a role by encouraging their boys and parents to give Boy Scouting a try. The best relationship is one that lasts all year with joint activities over a long period of time to form a familiarity with the Boy Scout troop that the boys will move into. Earn the F.O. Belzer Award by crossing over 75 percent of the second year Webelos! If there are any questions concerning Webelos transition, call Christine Dudley at (765) 289-5661.
Day Camp and Summer Camp
Calling all packs, troops and crews in the district! It is time to start thinking about summer camp! All Cub Scouts are invited to attend Red Wing Day Camp June 16-20. The boys will have lots of fun shooting stuff, swimming and making crafts! All current Bears and Webelos 1 are invited to attend Webelos Adventure Camp at any point for a 3-day stay from June 8-July 16. They will also have lots of fun camping and exploring! All current Webelos 2 (who should be transitioning into Boy Scouts soon!) and all Boy Scouts are invited to attend either Camp Krietenstein or Ransburg all summer for one-week sessions from June 1-Aug. 9. The Scouts will get a chance to participate in more than 20 Merit Badge programs! All Venturers are invited to attend Ransburg for either 5-day or 3-day sessions July 27- Aug. 9. This is a custom program, so you get to decide what you want to do! We encourage and hope that all scouts will attend and enjoy a summer camping experience. Please register now as space fills up quickly for sessions and weeks during the summer. We hope you can all attend!

CPR Training
Three Boy Scout Troops were certified in CPR on April 15. Troop 223 of Shelbyville hosted the event. Troop 71 from Marietta and Troop 233 from Greenfield also attended. The Scouts attended an evening of learning and practicing CPR on infant, adolescent and adult mannequins. Twenty three Boy Scouts and eight leaders earned their CPR Certification. Instructors from the Beech Grove Fire Department, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, Shelbyville Fire Department and a nurse from Indianapolis worked together to get the scouts certified.
Welcome
There are new faces in the district committee who are helping out and getting the job done. When you get a chance to meet them, give them a big Iron Horse welcome. Don’t be surprised when one of these fine folks call you to see if they can help you with your program or just to say hello.
Camp
The fun and fellowship Scouts receive at camp is one of the life experiences they will never forget. Remember, a great summertime program will help make your School Night go smoother and get you the boys recruited as well as the adult help all units can use. Don’t let summer pass you by without enjoying one of the best times a boy can have.
Training
Training is a large part of the Scouting tradition! Make sure all your leaders take full advantage of all the training they can to face excited boys with endless energy. Check our district calendar for training events. Contact Barb Blue at bblue@lightbound.com or Patrick Walls to set up training for your group if you can’t make a scheduled event.
Be Prepared
Be ready for next year’s events. Simple things like setting up a calendar of events for your group, doing a budget (Unit Program Planning at our http://www.crossroadsbsa.org), deciding who will be your popcorn kernel, Scouting for Food chair and camping chair. One afternoon of planning can make life easier for your group come fall when recruitment is in full swing.

2008 Spring Camporee
It has been an exciting spring for all of us here in the Northeast District! Our district Camporee at Camp Red Wing was a huge success with nine troops in attendance and a ton of adult volunteers. A special thanks to Ann Phillips, John Ritter, and Frank Merrill who all worked very hard behind the scenes to make this Camporee such a great one for Northeast. We are all looking forward to the fall camporee and hope to completely fill up the camp!
2008 Mayors Breakfast
On Friday, May 16 Northeast district held its first Mayor’s Breakfast for Scouting out at Camp Belzer. Mayor Paul Ricketts of Lawrence was kind enough to host the breakfast and shared his testimony on the relevance and importance of Scouting in his life and in the lives of his immediate family members. About forty people attended, including the police and fire chiefs of Lawrence, numerous Scouting supporters from the Lawrence community, several Northeast District volunteers, and a number of new supporters of Scouting. Special thanks go out to our District Chair, Allan Sutherlin; District Commissioner, Doug Walker; Finance Chair, Tim George; and Field Director, Jeff Hotchkiss. I would also like to thank the Mayor of Lawrence and his administrative assistant, Sarah Walker, for all of their support. This Breakfast will be an annual tradition in Northeast, and we hope to have twice as many attendees next year.
Cub Specific Trainings
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, June 11. Beginning at 6 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m., we will be hosting Tiger Specific, Wolf/Bear, Webelo Specific, Pack Committee, and Cubmaster trainings. For those of you interested in the Baloo training, we will host a two evening session beginning on Tuesday, June 10 from 6-9 p.m., and continuing on Wednesday, June 11th from 6-9pm. The fee will be $6 per person, and we there will be drinks and refreshments. Please contact Peter Reynolds at 925-1900 ext. 215 or our District Training Chair, Amy McMahon at 251-5247.

She has worked in youth and community development for the last 10 years for the YMCA, Jewish Community Center, and other community based organizations. She has a master’s degree in social work from New York University and have worked in Bloomington, Indianapolis, Evansville and the Bronx. She is excited to serve as North Star District Executive and looks forward to working to enrich the lives of our boys and fellow community members!
June District Committee Meeting
This meeting is scheduled for June 5 at 7 p.m., at 6170 Guilford Ave, Broad Ripple. Plan to attend and meet Kristi as well as participate in the planning of upcoming district events.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway School Night Training
This year’s training for unit and district level volunteers will be an exciting example of how to incorporate the “Race into Scouting” theme. Whether you are a brand new leader or an experienced hand at School Night, there will be something for you at this event. A midway of events and a picnic style dinner will be served. Look for more details coming your way!
Friends of Scouting
As of May 21, 2008, the district is at 85% of goal with about $10,000 yet to raise! Thanks to all the units that have participated in this year’s drive to fund Scouting in the North Star District! If you haven’t made a gift yet, you still can!
In search of a few good Commissioners!
District Commissioner Glen Harkness is looking for a few good Scouters! He is in the process of identifying adults who were in Scouting the past few years but are no longer registered. He will be asking current Scouters for help in identifying which of these people would be good to recruit as commissioners, so you may get a call for some advice in late June.
Webelos that didn’t join Boy Scouting
We have a fairly large list of boys that graduated out of their Cub Pack whose den leader or Cubmaster think they were going to join a Boy Scout troop. Our only problem is that they have never registered in Boy Scouts. In order for a boy to attend camp, he must be registered as a Boy Scout. To avoid having to deal with this problem while you are at camp, you can check to see who you have registered now. If you want to check which boys you currently have registered in your troop or want to see which may be available to recruit, contact Kristi Howard at (317)925-1900 or e-mail her at Khoward@crossroadsbsa.org.
http://www.crossroadsbsa.org/oldtrail/
Whoever would think that you could have a shooting merit badge camporee without doing any shooting?
Shooting sports was the theme for Old Trail District’s Spring Camporee, April 18-20. The 175 Scouts and leaders who attended didn’t shoot but they did see and get to handle nearly every kind of firearm made in the past 400 years, ranging from 17th-century cap-and-ball pistol to a World War I-era fully automatic machine gun.
All were fully legal and firearm safety was emphasized by their owners.
The Old Trails Rifle and Pistol Club organized and hosted the event at their campground south of Richmond. Club members and friends conducted demonstrations that covered all of the requirements (except shooting) for both the Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting merit badges. The club invited all troops to return later to complete the merit badges.
A living history of firearms was on display, including bayonets and rifles from the American Revolution, a cannon used in Civil War reenactments, six-shooters from the Old West and modern assault weapons demonstrated by the Richmond Police Department SWAT team. One session covered the parts of firearms; another, hunter safety.
At day’s end, Scouts were treated to demonstrations of various weaponry, including a water-cooled machine gun, the cannon, dueling pistols and equipment used by the SWAT team.
The event was organized by Kathy Keller, district camporee chair, working with Jerry Maule, the club president, and his son, Eagle Scout Chris Maule.

2008 Summer Camp
Hopefully most of you have already signed up for camp. Remember, in most cases, it’s not to late to add any youth who might like to go to Cub Day Camp, Webelos Camp, or Boy Scout Camp. If you have any late registrations be sure to call the Scout Office at 925-1900.
Friends of Scouting
The Pathfinder Friends of Scouting campaign has been a huge success this year. We have had more units than ever participate this year. Your support is greatly appreciated. You can help us reach our goal and support Scouting for many years to come!
School Nights
Summer is finally here, so it’s time to start thinking about going back to school! The fall is the best time to recruit new kids and adults into your Cub Scout pack and a School Night for Scouting is the best way to do it! Call Warren and Kate at 925-1900 to schedule your school night, TODAY!
Program Kickoff
We’ve got to have something to keep all those kids we recruit in the fall busy, right? Get your unit pumped up for a great year of Scouting by having ALL of your volunteers and parents attend the Pathfinder District Program Kickoff on Aug.14. You’ll be able to get all the information you need to make this the best year of Scouting yet. You can sign up for the popcorn sale, school nights, as well as eat and socialize with your fellow Pathfindorians. Invitations and more information will be in your mailbox and available at roundtable soon. Last year, balloons of money fell from the sky! Who knows what our program team has up their sleeves this year?

Food for Thought
With the school year at a close and everyone preparing for and going to camp, the fall months seem very far away. However, with careful planning the fall can be much easier and beneficial for everyone. Pioneer District has a new District Popcorn Kernal, Toni Richardson (359-4370), who is preparing for another successful popcorn campaign. You can help Toni (and your pack, troop, or crew) by selecting someone to be your Unit Popcorn Kernal. Please contact Toni with your Unit Kernal’s contact information. Start planning now so your pack, troop, or crew can have its most successful popcorn sale ever!
This is also a good time to start preparing for your pack’s fall recruitment. There are several questions you need to ask:
- What are the pack’s adult leadership needs?
- Are all of your pack’s leaders returning in the fall?
- Do we need more Den Leaders, Assistant Den Leaders, Committee Members, etc.?
- When is your school’s registration day/night? It is a good idea to have a table set up to distribute information regarding your pack, troop, or crew as well as have applications and calendars available.
- Has your pack, troop, or crew planned its calendar for the rest of the year? If not, now is a good time to start planning!

Tiger Recruitment
Thank you to all those units who conducted a spring recruitment. What a great way to get new boys involved in Scouting at one of the most fun times of the year – summertime! Nothing compares to seeing a new Tiger Cub having a blast at Day Camp! On that note – be sure to encourage new families to attend Day Camp with their new Cub Scout. Even if they can not attend the entire week have them come out to camp for one day. With program planning being conducted now for the 2008-2009 year – try to get an idea of what new parents would be interested in assisting with, either at the den or pack level.
Boone County Intern
As mentioned at Roundtable, a grant was approved from the Boone County Community Foundation in regards to their Fatherhood Initiative last year. This has allowed the district to hire an intern to assist with marketing and membership in Boone County to get more boys involved with Scouting so they may receive the benefits of having contact with positive adult male role models within the program. Alex Thompson has already begun and will be with us through the end of September. He is a senior at Wabash College and an Eagle Scout – let us all give him a warm welcome. Boone County leaders will definitely be talking more with Alex in the near future!
Program Planning
April’s Roundtable had a host of information passed on to leaders. Dustin O’Brien gave a very informative presentation on Program Planning. This process should be completed in the spring time so that your unit is prepared going into the summer since August and the beginning of another school year is right around the corner. Packets were distributed to each unit – if you were not able to attend please contact Carolyn to receive your packet. Every unit is strongly encouraged to sit down with their committee and plan the next program year, including how it will be financed. A well planned program is the key to a successful program!
*If you need assistance with this process please contact your commissioner or Carolyn.

Kick that Program Year off Right
Welcome one and all to the T-Sun-Ga-Ni District Program Kick-Off 2008. We will be meeting Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. This important meeting will be your chance to receive the tools and resources to start your Scout year off right. Make sure to mark your calendars because this is one meeting YOU SHOULD NOT MISS. IPS returns to the classroom on Aug 16 – let’s be ready with great programs for those boys!
District Popcorn Kick-Off
Come find out what is new with popcorn this year! The district’s yearly training on new products and procedures will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Tabernacle Presbyterian at 6:30 p.m. Don’t miss out on all the new information for this year’s sale. Attendance (unit representation) at this event is very important.
Successful School Nights for Scouting
It’s time to start thinking about your unit’s fall membership recruitment. Every elementary school in the district will have some type of back to school program. The district membership committee will work with your unit to set the date and help with a program. Please be prepared for your school night by working with your school to get a date that is not in conflict with a back to school function. School Nights for Scouting should be the only game in town on that night to insure maximum participation. Also have an ample supply of adults available from your unit to assist the new families. For questions, call the district staff, Dauntee, Diane or John in the Scout office.
