Golden-Burke Scout Center Trainings

There are always exciting training opportunities at the Golden-Burke Scout Center.  We offer a variety of courses to fulfill your training needs, ranging from mandatory trainings, like Scoutmaster Specific, to special interest courses, like Unique Cooking.  If you would like to attend any of these courses or would like more information please email volunteer@crossroadsbsa.org .  And remember we are always looking to offer new courses so please contact us if you have a course idea or if you are interested in teaching a course.  Join our course email list to stay informed about upcoming courses.

Upcoming Courses

The Duties of the Religious Emblems Programs Coordinator – Saturday, May 12, 10 a.m. - noon
Training for Scout leaders and church leaders on how to maintain and track the Religious Emblems Programs in the unit.

American Red Cross CPR / AED Certification Class – Tuesday, May 15, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Attending this course will allow you to become American Red Cross CPR and AED Certified Class. $6 course fee can be paid upon arrival. There are only 10 spots available in this session, so you must RSVP. Please see flyer for more information.

Firecrafter: Lone Troop Training – Wednesday, May 16, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Lone Troop Training is for units who plan to camp outside of the main CAC camps this season and implement the Firecrafter program.  The training will review current standards and requirements for the program, thus ensuring that all Firecrafter candidates are receiving uniform instruction, standards, and experiences.  Please see flyer for additional details.

Merit Badge Counselor Training – Wednesday, May 16, 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.
This course covers the purpose of the merit badge program, the role of the merit badge counselor, and methods of counseling. Attending this course will allow you to become certified as a Merit Badge Counselor.

Safe Sitter®: Babysitting Training and More – Saturday, May 26, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Safe Sitter, an up-to-date and well-rounded youth development program with a medical basis, teaches young teen babysitters everything they need to know to keep themselves and the children in their care safe.  The nationally-recognized, pediatrician-developed program includes child care techniques, basic first aid, rescue techniques (like choking infant and child rescue), babysitting as a business, and online and cellphone safety.  The program is for young teens 11+.  Cost: $30 (BSA or AHG), $40 all others.  Please see flyer for additional details.  Payment Form  Registration Form

Drug and Alcohol Education Workshop – Wednesday, May 30, 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Learn about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use.  For Scouts who could not participate in a D.A.R.E. program, this is an opportunity to complete requirements for Second Class or Webelos.  Adults and Scouts are welcome to attend.  Please see flyer for additional details.

Scoutmaster Specific Training – Saturday, June 2, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
This is a required training for all Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters within a unit.  It covers the role of the Scout leader in a Boy-Led Troop, the Outdoor Program and Advancement Program, and Program Planning and Troop Administration. Please see flyer for additional details.

Merit Badge Counselor Training – Thursday, June 7, 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.
This course covers the purpose of the merit badge program, the role of the merit badge counselor, and methods of counseling. Attending this course will allow you to become certified as a Merit Badge Counselor.

Planning and Conducting Scout Worship Services – Saturday, June 9, 10 a.m. - noon
Training for Scout leaders and Church leaders on how to plan and conduct worship services for Scout Sunday, Summer Camp, and special Scout meetings and Scouting events.

Outdoor Leader Skills Training – Thursday, June 14, noon - 6 p.m.
This course teaches the practical outdoor skills needed to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors.  Subjects covered include: flag etiquette, plant identification, packing and hiking techniques, map and compass, cooking and first aid.  Please see flyer for additional details.

Youth Protection Training – Tuesday, June 19, 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m.
This course teaches BSA policies for the protection of youth members and is required for ALL registered adults.

Venturing Youth Protection Training – Tuesday, June 19, 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.
This course teaches BSA policies for the protection of youth members and is required for all Venturing leaders.

Scoutmaster Specific Training – Thursday, June 21, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Fish and Wildlife Management Merit Badge Session – Saturday, June 23, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Attending this course will allow you to earn a Fish and Wildlife Management Merit Badge.  Please see flyer for additional details.

Geology Merit Badge Session – Tuesday, July 17, noon - 3 p.m.
Attending this course will allow you to earn a Geology Merit Badge.  Please see flyer for additional details.

Outdoor Leader Skills Training – Wednesday, July 18, 1 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Poisonous Plants – Saturday, July 21, 10 a.m. - noon
Learn how to identify types of poisonous plants, symptoms of exposure, and ways to prevent contact.  Adults and Scouts are welcome to attend.

Animal Tracks – Saturday, July 21, noon - 2 p.m.
Learn how to identifying signs and tracks for animals from Indiana and the surrounding areas.  You will also learn how to make a plaster mold.  Adults and Scouts are welcome to attend.

Scoutmaster Specific Training – Thursday, July 26, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
This is a required training for all Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters within a unit.  It covers the role of the Scout leader in a Boy-Led Troop, the Outdoor Program and Advancement Program, and Program Planning and Troop Administration. Please see flyer for additional details.

Varsity Leader Specific Training – Saturday, July 28, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
This is a required training for leaders within the Varsity Scout Program.  It covers Scouting Ideals, Team Method, the Outdoors, Advancement, Association with Adults, Personal Growth, Leadership Development, and the Uniform.  Please see flyer for additional details.

Basic training for Boy Scouts serving as a Unit Scout Chaplain's Aide.  Scout Unit Chaplains and Scout leaders may also attend.

Fish and Wildlife Management Merit Badge Session – Saturday, August 25, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Attending this course will allow you to earn a Fish and Wildlife Management Merit Badge.  Please see flyer for additional details.
