Golden-Burke Scout Center Trainings

There are always exciting training opportunities at the Golden-Burke Scout Center.  We offer a variety of courses to fulfill your training needs, ranging from mandatory trainings, like Scoutmaster Specific, to special interest courses, like Unique Cooking.  You can by phone, or email.  If you would like more information or would like to request a course, please email volunteer@crossroadsbsa.org.  Join our course email list to stay informed about upcoming courses.

Merit Badge Counselor Training  – Thursday, March 6 from 7 pm – 8 pm REGISTER
Instructor – Roger Schumacher
This course covers the purpose of the merit badge program, the role of the merit badge counselor, and methods of counseling. Attending this course will allow you to become certified as a Merit Badge Counselor.

 Scouting as a Ministry of the Church  – Saturday, March 8, 10 a.m. - noon    REGISTER

 

NRA Range Safety Officer Training - Saturday, March 8 8 am - 5 pm

Instructor Alan Slightom

This NRA course will provide all the necessary training to become an Range Safety Officer (RSO).

Cost: $25
When: Sat 3/8/14, 8 am – 3 pm
Where: Golden-Burke Scout Center
 

First Aid Certification Class      – Wednesday, March 12, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. REGISTER
Attending this course will allow you to become ECSI First Aid Certified.  Class space is limited so you must register to guarantee your spot.  The $10.00 course fee can be paid upon arrival. Please see flyer for more information. 

Merit Badge Counselor Training  – Wednesday, March 19  from 7 pm – 8 pm REGISTER

Instructor – Denise Purdie-Andrews

This course covers the purpose of the merit badge program, the role of the merit badge counselor, and methods of counseling. Attending this course will allow you to become certified as a Merit Badge Counselor. 

 

NRA Pistol Instructor Training - Saturday, March 22 and Sunday March 23 8 am - 5 pm
Instructor Alan Slightom

This course will cover all the necessary training to become an NRA Pistol Instructor. 

Cost: $75
When: 2 Days (3/22/14 – 3/23/14) 8:00 am Saturday – 10:00 am Sunday
Where: Inlow Aquatics Center at Ransburg Scout Reservation


Spring Break Camp - March 24-26               Flyer         Registration

 

The Scout attending the Spring Break Camp will earn the following merit badges:  Fish & Wildlife Management, Geocaching, Collections, Oceanography and Complete the Den Chief Training.  If more time is available another Merit badge will be covered

Merit Badge Counselor Training    – Thursday, April 3 from 7 pm – 8 pm REGISTER

CPR/AED Training      – Tuesday, April 8 From 6 pm – 9 pm REGISTER
Instructors – Elleen Laughlin
This course covers basic adult, child, and infant CPR and AED training. You will receive your Emergency Care and Safety Institute Certification Card the night of the course. Course fee: $10

 

First Aid Certification Class     – Wednesday, April 9, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. REGISTER

The Religious Emblems Programs  – Saturday, April 12, 10 a.m. - noon    REGISTER

 

Crew Captain Workshops are for adults  - Saturday, April 12, 9 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.     REGISTER
(e.g., educators and Scout leaders) to learn about fish biology, Indiana's aquatic ecosystems, fish management in Indiana, basic angling skills, and angler ethics. 
Participants will become Crew Captains and can then take this knowledge and these skills to their classrooms and community.  Crew Captains also can receive educational materials and fishing equipment to implement the program.

Baloo and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Trainings - Flyer - Saturday, April 19th 2014 9:00am – 5:00pm REGISTER

Any Cub Scout leader with a desire to plan and carry out an outdoor experience for their pack.  At least one adult leader must be BALOO trained in order for a Cub Scout Pack to participate in overnight camping.  This course covers everything you need to know to make your pack overnighter a fun, successful and BSA approved event.  This training is for Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Cub Leaders within a unit that covers outdoor skills that you need to teach Scouts skills leading up to First Class.

 

Working with Scouts with Disabilities Saturday, Flyer - April 26, 2014 From 10:00am – 12:00pm REGISTER
Instructor - Sally Byer and Brad Buckhorn
Who:  Any individual wishing to learn about working with Scouts with Disabilities.  The course will cover the definition of a disability, how to teach and promote
learning for Scouts
with Disabilities, holding a Disabled Scout/Parent Conference, and documenting a disability.  We will touch on advancement for Scouts with Disabilities, but it will not be the focus of this workshop.


Project Learning Tree - Date:  Saturday, April 26th 2014  9:00am – 4:00pm REGISTER
Instructor - Sara Saypack
Project Learning Tree provides a mix of many topics that Scout leaders and educators can utilize to help youth explore the environment.  Through this course you will get the basics of the Pre K - 8 program as well as these secondary topics:  Exploring Environmental Issues: Focus on Forests;  Focus on Risk;  Municipal Solid Waste;  Places We Live;  and  Global Connections: Forests of the World.

SAFE SITTER®: Babysitting Preparation for Pre-Teens & Peace of Mind for Parents Saturday, May 17th 2014 9:00 am - 4:00 pm  REGISTER

Today’s babysitters need to know more than just the basics to keep themselves and the children in their care safe. That’s why Safe Sitter®, an up-to-date and well-rounded youth development program with a medical basis, teaches young teens life and safety skills to keep them safe now and in the future. It also equips them with the tools needed to stay home alone safely and with confidence.

Safe Sitters learn:

How, why and where injuries happen so they can prevent them
How to decide the seriousness of an injury if it does happen
How to get help if needed
How to keep themselves safe when babysitting or at home alone
How a child’s age affects how to care for them
How to prevent problem behavior
How to rescue a choking infant or child
How to run a babysitting business
How to be safe when online or using a cellphone 
 

The Duties of the Religious Emblems Programs Coordinator – Saturday, May 10, 10 a.m. - noon    REGISTER
Training for Scout leaders and church leaders on how to maintain and track the Religious Emblems Programs in the unit.

Merit Badge Counselor Training  – Wednesday, May 21  from 7 pm – 8 pm REGISTER

Instructor – Denise Purdie-Andrews

This course covers the purpose of the merit badge program, the role of the merit badge counselor, and methods of counseling. Attending this course will allow you to become certified as a Merit Badge Counselor. 

 
Planning and Conducting Scout Worship Services - Saturday, June 14 from 10 am – 12 pm     REGISTER
Instructor – Jim Brinkley
Training for Scout leaders and Church leaders on how to plan and conduct worship services for Scout Sunday, Summer Camp, and special Scout meetings and Scouting events.



Earn a University of Scouting Degree at the Golden-Burke Scout Center

Bachelor of General Studies Requirements

1.  Adult Youth Protection Training for your registered position.
2.  Basic Training in your registered position.
3.  Complete six (6) hours of training that are offered at the Golden-Burke Scout Center in at least two (2) different courses.

NOTE:  This is a standalone Bachelor’s degree that can only be earned at the Golden-Burke Scout Center beginning September 1, 2012.  When you complete the requirements, submit your record card to the Council to receive your degree.
